Personal Tech - Disk Defragment - How to Avoid Problems of Defragmentation

Tech & Personal

Droid owners have now had their cool new Motorola Droid Smartphone for Verizon in their hands long enough to have put it through its paces. When a new product rolls out, there is usually a split opinion on its popularity. How do the owners feel about their new tech toy? We contacted Droid owners, and give you their overall feeling, which is surprisingly one-sided.

I am experiencing quite a few freezes and BSOD’s (blue screen errors) lately and have gone through my system with a very fine tooth comb. Have cleaned out the cobwebs, checked temperature, spyware etc. Nothing works! Have also used registry cleaners, optimization tools (here, he mentions one in particular) but still no luck. So it could be a driver related problem. So I downloaded a driver scanner. A few seconds into the scan everything froze up solid. Tried again: Complete crash! The freezes often happen when grabbing an image in order to make it smaller or larger to make it fit a page or when working with Windows Live Mail or when watching a live stream Video (never with YouTube!). I’ve then tried a different scanner but the scan just skipped a few sections (?) and ended up with 1 outdated driver (mouse). I’ve been in contact with the driver scanner’s support and they concluded it was conflicting software. No matter what: How can I perform a driver scan when my system freezes every time. Please advice….

My answer I would have emailed to him would have been as follows:

I agree with the driver scanner support people you were talking with; you have a conflict. However, before you go too far into this problem, be aware of two things:

· Viruses and Spyware can create conflicts and

· A certain amount of repairs I make weekly are to PC’s that have been scanned for viruses and spyware, sometimes several times, but didn’t find the infection that was hiding on the hard drive.

It is a must for you to close down all the applications when defragmenting and not to perform any read-write operation. If this Windows program finds any such operation, it may start again and again.

I really think you have an undetected virus or you have two different virus/spyware type scanners creating a conflict. Still, if following this procedure doesn’t get you anywhere, it is time to backup your files and reinstall your operating systems. Virus scanners, registry cleaners and such are great for stopping problems from developing to this point but still, sometimes some problems do take your OS beyond the point it can be repaired. Sorry, it happens. However, I still think you have a virus hiding in there and with a little diligence, you’ll get it out. Good luck!
