Amazon Kindle 2 Review – What Makes It Such a Popular eBook Reader?

You may not have heard about the Kindle when it first released. Compared to some technologies such as the iPhone and new versions of Windows, the Kindle was a fairly quiet release. If you are an avid reader, you were probably more than a little intrigued. But intrigue grew into popularity with the release of the much-improved Kindle 2. And now with the Kindle DX, the most advanced reader on the market, Amazon has become the single most popular maker of ebook readers.

If you don’t own a Kindle yet, you may be wondering what makes the device so popular. Is the technology that phenomenal or is it just all hype? It’s actually a blend of both. While many are sticking it out with the good old book, the Kindle does take reading to a whole new level. Just imagine being able to take your whole library with you anywhere. Its portability and the capacity to hold thousands of books (about 3,000 for the DX, 1,500 for the Kindle 2) is what makes the gadget appealing. Although the new Kindle DX is larger in size than the Kindle 2, both are no thinner than a regular magazine.

The Kindle 2 may be the most popular handheld ebook reader available, but it certainly isn’t the only one. The DX, however, is really the only one of its kind available. It offers a huge screen, more storage and some cool features such as a rotating screen like the iPhone. But it also makes a huge price jump from the Kindle 2.

The cost is probably the major reason many people don’t have a DX and perhaps why many people never will. At nearly 500 dollars, you would expect the ebook reader to do, or come with, a lot more. You don’t get a cover, you don’t get any free books, you can only view in grayscale and you end up with a device that is extremely limited due to copy protection. If you pay so much, why can’t you get a few extras thrown in?

Since the Kindle is a fairly new device, it still hasn’t completely broken into the market. Although it is the most popular one, the Kindle still can’t offer its internet connection service outside the country. Once the Kindle is more established, this is likely to change. For now, many people just see it as a fancy way to read books. But it wasn’t so long ago that the iPod was just a fancy way to listen to music. Now, it is one of the most widely spread pieces of technology you can find. The Kindle remains revolutionary in what it offers. Eventually, it is hard to imagine that paper books will not be replaces. For now, it is still a luxury to many people, but as it discovers its territory in the marketplace, more and more homes will be losing the bookshelf and getting a Kindle.
